Contrary to what I first thought, growing and selling food is not going to cut it in terms of bringing in money. Sure, it means that I won’t starve, but people don’t buy handcrafted farm-made goods anymore. That will be purely for my own enjoyment. And yes, I plan to enjoy it thoroughly! We live in the Information Age. That means that how-to videos are much more valuable than the actual thing the how-to was made for! Ironically.
After a serious discussion with Auntie Google, I have come to the conclusion that the best way to generate an income from Agterplaas (or whatever the name of my homestead would be) would be to blog (and vlog) about the experience and maybe create separate channels for different aspects of the journey. It would mean a lot of extra work and a whole new set of skills to learn. Am I ready for that? At 45? Hell, yeah!
Frankly, my darling, I don’t really have a choice in the matter. As I said before, I need to generate an income pretty much right from the beginning – no waiting until the first harvests comeĀ in!
What will I be documenting on this journey of mine?
- An introduction to me, my journey, and what led me to the decision.
- Preparing for the change. Courses and paperwork.
- Sticky red tape. Lots of it!
- Purchasing the land. Why? What exactly am I looking for?
- Drone survey.
- Preparing the land. Water, sanitation, fencing.
- Getting ready to move.
- Locked, loaded, and rolling!
- First night in my new place
- Different projects, one by one, according to priority.
- Highlights, low points, and special occasions.
Equipment needs
- A good video camera would be of utmost importance. There are many options available, but many of the site authors agree that smartphone cameras these days are sophisticated enough for recording basic vlogs. They do recommend a professional camera for better quality visuals, though, along with a tripod to keep the camera stable. The tripod will be used for my phone camera as well,
- Sound equipment, especially if shooting footage outside (where 90% of my filming will be). The consensus is that a lapel microphone provides the best quality sound.
- Studio lighting, and a good background against which to shoot footage.
