To say my life is busy right now would be the understatement of the year. For the past 4 months, I’ve only hit the ground every 6 meters or so, and I live off Switch energy drinks on a good day.
Why? Well, at the ripe old age of 49, this hooligan decided to enroll at UNISA for the Post-Graduate Diploma in Library and Information Science. All six modules. At once. That meant a (temporary, I hope!) goodbye to a proper night’s sleep and a rough re-introduction to Team Last Minute.
My property in Koingnaas is lying fallow until further notice. I have found a good house plan, though, and it’s currently with the draughtspeople at Siteform, near Bloemfontein in the Free State. They have amended the roof plan, changed the measurements to millimeters, and will work out the foundation plan for me as well. And then Bern will send me a quotation for work from the foundation to the rooftop, the outside cladding, and everything dried in perfectly. It will cost me a small fortune, but with luck I will have a bedroom, a bathroom, a place to cook, and a place to work while I work out the lighting, outlets, and how I shall afford to finish the house properly.
Well, I know how to afford to finish the house. I’ll probably document the build on YouTube and pray for enough views. No, I have no idea how many people would be interested in seeing a steel frame house go up on the South African West Coast, but I hope it’s enough to pay to finish the building properly, and for me to start preparing for the crazy venture after that.
YouTube has new strict rules governing monetization through its advertising revenue. From February 2027, it’ll be:
Fan Funding: 500 subscribers, 3 public uploads in 90 days, and either 3,000 long-form watch hours (past year) OR 3 million Shorts views (past 90 days).
Advertising Revenue Share: 1,000 subscribers and either 8,000 long-form watch hours (past year) OR 20 million Shorts views (past 90 days).
I think it’s to keep out AI creations and to encourage creators to become serious about their offerings. Frankly, I don’t have much of a choice in the matter – building the house is going to take a small busload of money, and I’ll need to generate an income fast or live the life of a starving writer for a while. I like to eat. Hence the need for fast income.
So this is my next two years, summed up in about 10 paragraphs. I’m going to make a go at it regardless. If I can survive both a heavy diploma course and this build with my mind intact, I should pretty much be able to survive anything else.
