I don’t go to my local police station often, even though it is situated a block from where I currently stay. Like hospitals and courthouses, I find police stations depressing places, filled with people who have had bad things happen to them, are about to have bad things happen to them or are supporters of the aforementioned groups.
This morning, I had to be there. Strangely enough, nothing bad had happened to me recently, but there was a break-in at work about a year ago and my boss had lost the paperwork. My name was on the original statement, so I was the designated deputy for collecting the duplicates. No fun.
Anyway, after having wasted my time (not really, but still!) for an hour, trotting up and down stairs and down long corridors, I finally found someone willing to help me with my quest. As he worked, we chatted about the busyness of the crime office and the high levels of lawlessness. I told him that that was the main reason why I was considering leaving South Africa for Portugal. Strangely enough, he did not try to dissuade me.
When I joked about hopefully not having any outstanding arrest warrants to my name, he offered to look for me, informally. Not only can I rest assured that I don’t have any issues with the Law, but the officer also got the relevant documents for me, for when I need to apply for the police clearance. By the time I left, we both had smiles, and he got a hug from me, too!
The whole episode goes to show that if you are nice to someone working a service job behind a counter, you not only get what you need, but doors open that you did not expect to. Yes, I shall go and say goodbye before I go. Just because I can!
